Our Mission

OUR MISSION

To encourage literacy, learning and leadership. To promote pride, dignity, civic awareness and economic advancement through education and job training.

Members of the community and parishioners of the Holy Rosary/St. John Parish identified the need for basic literacy and life skills in the neighborhood. Consequently, on April 1, 1987 a community learning center was established at 640 South Ohio Avenue. Over the years this center has provided programs such as, basic job skills training, English as a Second Language, Proficiency test tutoring, life-skills classes, Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE), General Educational Development (GED) preparation classes and family life classes. In addition, we offer free child care for the participants enrolled in our programs. On June 21, 1990, the center became a 501 (C) (3) agency currently known as the St. John Learning Center.

Since 1987, the St. John Learning  Center as helped more than 1000 adults raise their basic literacy levels in reading, writing and math, achieve the Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma (GED), gain essential job and life skills to become self-sufficient and acquire employment. It is our mission to provide programs that foster self-reliance and independence to the residents of our community.

We have established a relationship with other agencies in our service community. Some of those agencies are Wesley United Methodist Church, Central Community House, The Salvation Army, Community Connection, Clean Break After School Program, The Alvis House, Jewish Family Services and Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services. We all work together to provide non-duplicated services in our communities.
